Two thirds of the annual rainfall in Korea is concentrated between June and September, with wide regional discrepancies. The amount of usable water resources per person is seriously deficient due to the high population density.

After the 1960s, demand for water resources increased sharply due to rapid industrialization, at the sacrifice of worsening the quality of water.

The cycle of serious droughts and floods was repeated year after year, so that enormous damages have been caused whether there was too little rain or too much of it.

Korea ranks as one of the countries that have difficulties in managing water.

With such natural conditions as a backdrop, KWRA was established in 1967 to resolve the water issue. KWRA, now, has 2,500 individual members from a diverse range of fields, and also numerous group members. It has established international cooperative systems with related bodies in foreign countries, and is continuously expanding its network. KWRA hosted the ICHE in 2000, and the 31st IAHR General Conference in 2005 in Korea.

KWRA goal is to contribute to academic development regarding the Earth water, and also to public welfare.
